Imagine living in a world where simply being who you are makes you a target. This is the frightening reality for many Jewish people in Germany today, after a shocking discovery: an Iranian spy may have been watching them, possibly planning something terrible.  

The Spy Who Was Watching

Last week, in the quiet Danish city of Aarhus, police arrested a man known only as Ali S. German investigators say he wasn’t just an ordinary man—he was working for Iran’s secret service gathering information on Jewish schools, community centers, and even specific Jewish families in Berlin. His mission? To spy on them, take photos of where they lived and gathered, and send details back to Iran.  

A Chilling Warning

When German officials found out, they reacted immediately. They called Iran’s ambassador and demanded answers. "We will not allow Jewish lives to be threatened in our country," they declared. For many in Germany’s Jewish community, this was a painful reminder that hatred against them is still very real.  

Who Was in Danger?

Among the places Ali S. was watching was the German-Israeli Society, a place where Jews and non-Jews come together to build friendship between the two countries. Even more frightening—he was also tracking a home sometimes used by Josef Schuster, one of Germany’s most important Jewish leaders.

Iran, of course, denied everything. They called the accusations "lies" said Germany was just trying to distract people from other political issues. But for those who were being watched, the fear was all too real.

Since the war between Israel and Hamas began last year, Germany has increased police patrols near synagogues and Jewish schools. Last September, a man with a rifle was shot near the Israeli consulate in Munich—another reminder that danger is never far away.
