Tragedy Strikes in Ha Long Bay: Tourist Boat Capsizes, Claiming 38 Lives

     


A devastating incident occurred on Saturday afternoon in Vietnam's Ha Long Bay, a popular tourist destination, when a sightseeing boat capsized during a sudden thunderstorm. The boat, named Wonder Sea, was carrying 53 people, including 48 passengers and five crew members sadly 38 people lost their lives, and seven others remain missing.


Rescue workers managed to save 12 people, including a 14-year-old boy who was trapped in the overturned hull for four hours. Dang Anh Tuan, a 36-year-old survivor, recounted his harrowing experience to the Associated Press. He described how the boat shook violently, and water rushed in after the storm hit. Tuan survived by swimming out of the window of the capsized boat and clinging to the overturned vessel along with three others until rescue teams arrived two hours later.


According to reports, passengers had requested the crew to return to shore before the accident, but they were reassured that the destination was near, and the boat continued on its course. The incident has raised concerns about safety measures and emergency preparedness in the tourism industry of Vietnam. 


The tragedy occurred as a tropical storm, Storm Wipha, is forecasted to hit northern Vietnam, including Ha Long Bay, next week. An investigation into the incident is likely to be conducted to determine the cause and identify ways to prevent such tragedies in the future. A decision taken by investigation departments.
